NATURAL TURFGRASS REINSTATED ON TOOWOOMBA RACE TRACK

In a recent article appearing in the July-August 2013 TurfCraft magazine, we noticed that the racecourse in Toowoomba will be reinstating natural turfgrass the project being undertaken by StrathAyr. We are sure this will be of interest to Queensland turf producers when discussing comparisons of natural, quality turfgrass and artificial, plastic, fake turf. After considerable discussion and marketing hype occurring over the past years regarding the installation of the artificial turf at Toowoomba Turf Club, common sense has prevailed and evidence outcomes submitted on the benefits of natural turfgrass in other sporting facilities globally has been proven here.

‘A 200-1 decision from the Toowoomba Turf Club to return to grass track racing from artificial turf that was supported by the Queensland government. The number of horses racing on the current artificial turf track has declined by 7% in the past year, runners provided to other meetings across Queensland from Toowoomba declined by 14% with a decrease wagering turnover of 24.8%. Toowoomba Turf Club states that the project was essential for the viability of the thoroughbred industry on the Darling Downs and would provide a much needed boost in confidence. After such declines club members and racing participants alike are looking forward to the commencement and completion of the natural turfgrass surface at the proud club’.
