Turf QLD Industry Alert |FIRE ANTS DETECTED IN LOWOOD
FIRE ANTS DETECTED IN LOWOOD
A new location of Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) have been detected west of Brisbane after 10 nests were found on vacant land in Lowood.
Turf Queensland has worked with Biosecurity Queensland’s National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program now for many years to support our members and keep them informed of any potential risks.
This is the 1st time Fire Ants have been found in the Somerset region 6 km outside the current fire ant bio security zone. It is a timely warning for all turf producers especially those in this area to check their property and ensure properties they delivered to our free of Fire Ants. It is an indication that The are not going away and turf producers must remain diligent.
Biosecurity Queensland’s National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program has confirmed that the discovery was made on a routine surveillance. The program officers have killed the nests with insecticide by direct injection and bait treated the area. Surveillance is now being undertaken within a 1 km radius of the nests to determine the cause of the outbreak.
Please refer to the attached “Fact Sheet” developed by Biosecurity Queensland for Managing Turf in a Fire Ant Biosecurity Zone.
Local residents and businesses in Lowood and surrounds are encouraged to check their properties for possible nests and report them to Biosecurity Queensland immediately.
