Unique Opportunity to See How Drones Are Shaping Work and Safety
Many Queensland businesses this week had a unique opportunity to get an in depth look at how drones are changing workplace safety, as representatives from multiple industries spoke at a workshop about how they are using this technology to keep their workers safe.
The workshop was held as a warm up session for the inaugural World of Drones Congress in Brisbane this week from 31 August to 2 September 2017 at the BC&EC. Each speaker at the warm up workshop described how they are using drones to enhance safety, getting them to do some of the dirty jobs, in out of the way places, in extreme weather, away from medical care and in areas where transport and communication are problematic.
In a big state like Queensland, with vast areas devoted to rural and resources production, as well as extremes of climate, it makes perfect sense for us to be world leaders in drone technology. Drones are creating new jobs for workers as farming, mining and construction employers repurpose roles by training them to operate the drones.
The workshop featured Queensland businesses which are using drones to eliminate risks such as working at height and working in remote, hazardous or toxic environments:
- Thompson Longhorn flies them above its stockyards to provide real time information on cattle movements.
- Electrix uses beyond line of sight flights to inspect powerlines and mitigate bushfire risks.
- Shell and Insitu Pacific similarly uses beyond line of sight drones to inspect gas fields and detect leaks.
- Shadforth Civil conducts real time and remote works inspections and environmental control reviews.
- Movie World is building towards using drones to inspect its rides.
Drone safety will also feature at the Congress itself, with the CEO of the Shenzhen UAV Manufacturers Association, whose members produce over 80 per cent of the world’s consumer drones, gives his unique insight into drone safety issues. The National Drone Safety Forum on Friday will look at the role of regulation and the safety implications of drones as they enter mainstream use.
